And another thing that Shannon should get a mention for is that she sent me tapes that were the first times I had heard Dar Williams and Ani difranco. At the time I didn’t realise what it was that I was hearing.
Lesson - sometimes it takes me a while to catch on.

Playlist for tonight @ the Yak
Dolly (Don’t be a Sheep) - because Molly asked for it.
Better on the ABC - because I may well be mentioned on the ABC site next week
This is not a love song - because it’s new
Slow Motion - because people like it and that’s a bit of fun.
Lesson for the playlist - hopefully there’s something for everyone

I have been greatly remiss in my blog. I have mentioned many friends and celebrated the degree to which they are fucked in the head.
One who I have missed is my friend Shannon who lives in Oregon. She also has a blog which makes good reading, especially in terms of what is different to here and scarily, how much is very much the same.
Shannon and I used to write the Agony Entity, which has been reborn but frankly pretty quiet. Although we have never met in person we have been exchanging emails for the better part of 4 years (if not more). The running joke is that if we ever meet to tell anyone who asked that we met on a ferry. Saying you’ve made a friend online was tragic 4 years ago and possibly more tragic now.
Lesson - it’s obvious but true, she is fucked in the head also.

My mother has a great line which she uses with great enthusiasm even though she didn’t actually coin it (nor does she claim to have).
The specific context is about raising children and the pearl is “it’s not if you fuck your kids up, it’s how you fuck them up.”
I think that the point is broadly true, pretty much everyone I know is, in some manner and to greater and lesser degrees, fucked in the head.
Now some people think I am just being harsh but I am convinced this is true. And I don’t necessarily think it’s such a bad thing.
The most interesting (and lovely for that matter) people I know have been involved in some pretty suspect situations. I think it is what goes wrong that shapes us most, you learn pretty much nothing from things going well.
Lesson for the night - at some point you start to see merit in what you mother holds to be true.

Last night we did go and see OSX on Willy’s iMac.
I knew it was different to previous Macintosh operating systems. I knew that it was a wee bit clever as I had read a little bit about it online.
But wow!
The whole thing is quite cinematic. Items move playfully and gracefully. The look is so crisp and so lush. It really is like the computers that they use in movies, you know the ones they mockup and you sit there and say “I wish they were that striking and easy to use”.
Lesson for the night - While it will a couple of years before I get a new Mac at least now I know why I want a new one.

I am going to look at OSX (the new Macintosh operating system) tonight. Willy has just installed it on his iMac and has offered to show me what it’s all about. The software kind of interests me but Willy always manages to be masterfully wry and that’s more than worth the journey.
Lesson for the night - Wry is worth a dozen operating systems.

Walking through the station this morning I saw someone from my floor at work in the crowed but I was listening to “One Big Love” from Red Dirt Girl. And I didn’t want to stop listening to have some pointless conversation. So I walked on.
Lesson for the morning - perhaps this makes me a selfish person, perhaps I can live with that.

Tune in words. Most of them can be used is a completely clean fashion. Try using one in a meeting and see who tunes in.
Adult
Performance
Erect
Lesson for the night - people really are more smutty that pretty much anyone cares to admit.

I just rang Nicky to tell her about my glasses. Before I could tell her she told me that she had read my blog so she already knew. I really don’t mind, but after all these years I find it difficult to sound at all new to Nicky (much as I try). At times like this I am not sure that the blog is such a bright idea.
Lesson - The only worse than not being read is…actually that would be about it.

A couple of years ago I gave up drinking coke for a month. There was no particular reason, it was just that I suspected that I drank a lot of it, and that was probably not a good thing. I suppose I also wondered if I could give up if I tried.
The short version is that I managed to get through the month coke free.
The slightly longer version is that it nearly killed me. The caffine withdrawal made me more than a wee bit tetchy and I found that in lots of situations (ie at McDonalds or mixed drinks) coke is pretty much the default.
I still drink it but I don’t think I have ever returns to the sort of consumption before that month.
Lesson - It’s a good thing I never took up smoking.
