I Am Not Afraid Of The Dark

31 08 2005

I can speak for you characters but I find a good defence against just having a complete freak out is a nice list. It makes things seems more like they just need to be tackled one by one which of course is all they need.

And the service I am using for this list is free and simple which is always good.

Lesson for the day - manage the freak out instinct any way you can.

Essential Learnings

31 08 2005

Tonight I made some homemade Playdoh for the students to use in an activity tomorrow. It seemed the school didn’t have any handy although I suspect that I would have found some if only I had the time and inclination to check every single room.

Instead I got a recipe off the web and have just made a massive mess in the kitchen. But I am that bit closer to being ready for tomorrow.

Perhaps they should teach us making Playdoh at Uni. Not all the time but perhaps just one lesson. It would be useful and quite possibly fun.

Just a thought.

Lesson for the day - not all play is bad.

A Mighty Wind Is Blowing

31 08 2005

I guess other folks around Melbourne noticed that it was windy and then some today.

A teacher told me that the kids are always ratty when it is really wind. You can ask any teacher she told me. Like dogs I guess.

Anyhow they were ratty en masse which is something to behold and they stayed indoors most of the day because it was declared a wet weather day because it was just so extreme outside.

Lesson for the day - not all wind is ill but sometimes it surely is,

Animal Magnetism

31 08 2005

On the subject of shopping NIcky bought a lovely thick wool underlay with magnets it in for our bed. While I often scoff at the commercials for these on daytime telly I think anything that might help Nicky’s buzzy ear or general wellbeing is certainly worth a try.

While I cannot say anything scientific I have had two good nights’ sleep on it. And while it might be a coincidence I did find myself facing north an awful lot yesterday.

Lesson for the day - just put your hands on a duck, then turn west.

He’s Electric

31 08 2005

On the weekend I did treat myself to an electric shaver from Harris Scarfe which seems to the Department Store of The Damned. Actually I shouldn’t bitch about their decor because said shaver was seriously reduced in price.

Anyhow Monday was the first morning I used it and I cut myself on my chin which bled and bled. While this might have made me look tough it just made me look clumsy. Or perhaps clumsier.

I know I am not the first to say this but it seems electric shavers don’t so much make you clean shaven as make you look like you are clean shaven. However for times like school round when I need to look shaven every day this is very handy indeed.

Lesson for the day - as I sometimes read in magazines electric is not always better but it is often quicker.

30 08 2005

It has been brought to my attention that perhaps Movable Type is not playing nice when people leave comments with particular content (like numerals). If this happens to you it would help me heaps if you could email me your comment and tell me what the error was.

Once I can reproduce an error I am very much closer to solving the problem. Except in my actual life where I mostly just repeat errors and keep the same uncomfortable distance from a solution.

Lesson for the day - I am pleased computer are as simple as they are.

The One Where I Bless Rad’s Cotton Socks

30 08 2005

There is little nicer than a family member who is not only happy to help out but thinks of new and tasty ways of to help further.

Lesson for the day - hoorah for Rad.

Day Six

30 08 2005

In case people are wondering today went very much better than yesterday at school. I don’t know that I handed the classes any better but I felt very much better about the whole experience than I did 24 hours ago.

So if you any of your five characters were wondering now you can stop.

Lesson for the day - how you take things is often a much bigger factor than the things themselves.

Awwww

29 08 2005

Nicky tells me that when Finn woke up this morning one of the first things he said was “Where’s Da?”

She told him I had to go to school which he accepted happily enough.

When I hear things like that it doesn’t matter how much my day sucked because I have a Nicky and a Foozley and that makes me pretty lucky.

Lesson for the day - being asked for by name is pretty nice.

Better Times Ahead

29 08 2005

It is fair to say that I have had better days. I have been on the go constantly since six this morning and what little I have achieved has been marked by it throwing into stark relief what a clownshoes I am. At least what a clownshoes I am today, I can only hope tomorrow will be different.

And I have only just started to rework my preparation for tomorrow which I discovered today needs a considerable amount of re-thinking and re-typing.

Lesson for the day - today the bear ate me.
