I found a nice big lemon under the tree tonight while I was watering. It’s still a little green so I brought it inside to finish off whatever it is that lemons do.
From looking at the tree I would say we are in for a bumper crop. Soon we’ll be just like Joanna and making lemon cordial.
Lesson for the day - I like having a garden that makes things for us.

I have been listening to the Scientific American 60 second podcast quite a bit in the last week and I like the format. I like it so much that I am going to try to produce a 60 second podcast of my own idle thoughts on most days.
Here is the first episode.

Since getting home from school my brain has been buzzing with things I need to get ready and information I need to get my head around. I am not worried about the first lesson with each class but I am aware that I do need to be ready for lessons two and three to happen on Friday and Monday.
Much as I tried to just go to sleep this buzzing has made sleep elusive.
I think I managed to be all asleep between about midnight and two but then EmmyLou woke us up and I was off again. So I figured I may as well get up and get some of my ideas on paper (or on the laptop really).
So that’s what I’ve done. I have some resources that need finding today but I pretty much know how this week is going to happen. Now I might try to get two and a half hours’ sleep before the day begins.
Lesson for the day - a lot to think about can make well needed rest tricky at best.

If all you want is the short version that is that my day went well and the school is every bit as friendly and welcoming as I imagined.

It came as no big surprise to me that today was a big traffic day for my blog. It came in at 127 visits in the 24 hours leading up to 11am this morning.
The previous record of 113 was some other day I was mouthing off about people who irritate me.
I am sure people were looking for news about my first day and very soon they’ll get just that. But first a boy and I are due in the bath.
Lesson for the day - for once I am having a fast news day.

For the first time in over three years I am off to work today in a fulltime job. And for the first time in almost four years I am off to work in a fulltime job where I expect to be both busy and productive.
I would ask you characters to wish me good luck but that would be a bit rich. In recent months I have had an incredible run of luck and, more importantly, the constant and warm support of friends and family.
But what I will do is wish all my fellow first year teachers the very best luck today. Not everyone has my natural arrogance and so walking into a new staffroom or meeting can be nerve bending at least. I hope you characters, and it is unlikely but possible one or two of you are reading, go well and enjoy every minute.
Lesson for the day - it should feel wrong to be looking forward to school but it doesn’t.

For want of anything better here are some photos of the bits and bobs I am taking to school.
Lesson for the day - feeling prepared is almost as good as actually being prepared.

Tomorrow I start work.
Today I need to work out if I have enough socks and to find a wrist watch.

The thing I really liked about Odeo for my podcasting was that it was quick and simple. At the moment that counts for a lot.
However yesterday it stopped working for new recordings. I am sure it will be back but right now it reminds me that free services are sometimes unreliable as well as cutting edge.
So I have swapped back to a simpler solution which involved the audio on my own site and the feed managed through a worpdress.com blog.
Anyhow if you want to subscribe through iTunes or anything else the feed address is -

And if you just want to listen by clicking through in blog entries here you can still do that. In fact here is the new episode.

The other day a child from work walked past our place while I was pouring the bath water on various plants in the front yard.
