The Biggest Fan

31 03 2007

It’s nice that some folk listen to the podcasts but what warms my heart most of all is that Nicky listens to them. She has never felt compelled to consume all the nonsense I create and so it really means something to me when she takes an interest.

After all, I like to think of myself as her biggest fan and who doesn’t like being noticed by their heroes.

Lesson for the day - you can have your celebrity status (now that I have mine)

Pimp My Record Collection

31 03 2007

I buy most of my new music through iTunes these days. They have a good range at at $17 an album the price is pretty good. I could always drive to the plaza and pay $20 or $25 for the same album and get a physical disc and artwork and liner notes but it seems like a poor extra a lot of the time.

You can also buy single songs for a buck seventy which is quite good. The trick is when it is a fifteen track album for $17 and I spent almost $2 on just one song. I then feel disinclined pay the whole $17 and buy the album fresh or worse still to buy it song by song and end up spending over $20.

Clever clogs that they are there at Apple they have introduced a feature called Complete My Album. To get the rest of the disc they just charge you the different between what you paid for single tracks and the whole album cost. So in the earlier scenario I get the remaining thirteen tracks for $15.30 and only end up paying $17 for the lot.

I think it’s quite clever and also think it will probably result in me taking the chance on more single songs and also me ending up with more whole albums.

Lesson for the day - a fool for music and his money are even sooner parted.

Staying Put Not Standing Still

31 03 2007

Back when I starting studying to be a teacher I was quite interested in our local school. Firstly I was interested as a parent since it will be the closest one for Finn but I was also interested as a place to possibly work. After all it is very close by and well resourced.

I actually ended up doing my final primary round there and it was well resourced and comfortable. However I did also find it quite smug and self important. Some people acted like they were the ones to carve out this middle class enclave in the west rather than the property developers. And the whole thing was run like a kingdom which has good sides and bad sides. So I wasn’t all that keen to actually work there but when things were looking lean at the end of last year I certainly considered it as a place to start.

My first secondary round was at quite a different school. It was an big old technical school way over the wrong side of the tracks. There was very little middle class anything going on. The staff were far from smug, in fact they were welcoming friendly and supportive. I really liked it and I would have loved to have worked there. They did advertise some jobs at the end of last year but I didn’t so much as get an interview.

Now as you probably know the school that finally have be a job for six months is wonderful. My campus is small but the whole school is big. The kids are good-natured if rarely natural born academics. And, importantly, I feel really appreciated and supported.

So when I saw jobs come up this week at that primary and that other secondary I didn’t give them a moment thought. I’d want to be carved out of chocolate to even consider anywhere else right now no matter how close to home it is.

Lesson for the day - go with what works when it comes to work.

Sweet Sixteen Days

30 03 2007

I like my job. I really do. The kids are well meaning if perhaps a little chatty. The staff are great. It’s really rewarding and I am thankful for it.

Having said all of that I am so glad I have two weeks at home. I have a heap of preparation for next term. I have quite a bit of marking from the last week. I have three people at home that I adore and want to spend more time with. I have sleeping in that needs seeing to.

And on another note I always like the photos I use in posts otherwise I wouldn’t pick them. There are just so many talented people and that they allow people to blog their lovely pics is just terrific. However the photo I am using for this entry is just amazingly pretty and poetic. Have a click on it and see it more of it.

Lesson for the day - cycles are good for you.

Golden Quality

Between them Nicky’s sister and Mum have been here all week helping out and it really has been a massive help. I have not had to cook a single meal and it has meant someone to hold the fort while Nicky has a sleep most afternoons.

However at night we kind of miss the switching off time.

So out of deference to the lovely Nicky I will try to say as little as possible to Nicky tonight. I will even refrain from mentioning that she is beautiful, clever, caring, and utterly wonderful. It’s all true of course but she can wait until tomorrow I am sure.

Lesson for the day - sometimes the best thing to say is absolutely nothing.

The Stop At The End

30 03 2007

It is the last day of my first term as teacher.

And not a moment too soon. I need a couple of weeks to prepare, to rest, and to actually finish sentences.

Lesson for the day - teaching is very much like eating an elephant.

The Interviews

30 03 2007

Listen

I have two heard two things people would like about the 1 Minute Mark. One is for me to just publish the audio and not give away the content with the text. The other is that I have heard that my Dad does not listen to the audio because he mainly reads from the library and that he would like some text so her can know what is happening.

I had toyed with putting some description in the archive so you would have to click through if you wanted that but it turns out that this is more work than I am prepared to put in each day. So instead I am asking for the help of my small collection of listeners. If you listen and have a minute extra to spare could you please write a comment describing the day’s podcast. Your write-up doesn’t have to be impartial or formal and you don’t have to commit to it every day or even regularly. Just if you see there is no comment yet and you have the time.

Now I don’t know if this idea will work but I figure it’s worth putting out there.

Lesson for the day - many hands make podcasts work.
