The Month of May

31 05 2007

Well it is the last day of the month which started with my snack free routine. I can’t say that I have been one hundred percent kosher with this and have resorted to a handful of Big Ms or honky buns with lunch.

Even with this lapses I have changed my eating habits and that’s no mean feat. I haven’t lost a lot of weight, down from ninety to eighty six on a good day, but I don’t feel like my weight is something out of my control any more either.

I expect the have lapses and treats from time to time but I also think this has been a change for the better.

Lesson for the day - you can choose not to snack.

A Life Less Ordinary

31 05 2007

I am sorry to see that words such as gormless, feckless, witless and even hopeless seem to be falling out of common usage.

I quite like the “less” words.

Lesson for the day - less of less is definitely less.

Blue Rinse

30 05 2007

Today was a busy and better day. It’s very hard to change the way the world but downright mental to get all upset about that fact.

Lesson for the day - all I have is platitudes.

Highway Robbery

30 05 2007

I needed petrol on the way home however the sign said $1.46 a litre.

I’ll end up going out tonight and paying that price but I did need some time to deal with the fact that this is 23c a litre more than I paid last week to fill up.

Lesson for the day - when you’ve got to go you’ve got to go.

Hiatus

29 05 2007

Episodes of The One Minute Mark will be back next week.

Honest.

Lesson for the day - even high profile podcasters need to stop now and then.

More Exciting Baby News

29 05 2007

I was thrilled tonight to learn that my long time friend Basia has had her baby. He is called Benjamin Ryan James Ozga Andrews. I’m guessing Ben for short.

As coincidence would have it he was born last Thursday, the same day as Drew. He arrived at a little over nine pounds and fifty two centimetres in length.

So congratulations to Basia and Gary.

It’s all very exciting.

Lesson for the day - there is nothing small about baby news.

Does It Ever Make You Wonder What’s On My Mind?

29 05 2007

“All your life you live so close to truth it becomes a permanent blur in the corner of your eye. And when something nudges it into outline, it’s like being ambushed by a grotesque.”
Rosencrantz and Gildenstern Are Dead

For reasons that are neither new, profound or all that monumental I have been going through a purple patch for a couple of days now. Perhaps this is my blue phase.

As much as anything it is probably a lot to do with the fact that I go and go and go. Some people can manage that shit but when I am stretched thin then things start to give. Part of it is probably to with the fact that I am actually incredibly precious.

Whatever the reason for this dip I am sure I’ll ride it out pretty quickly.

Lesson for the day - sometimes all you can do is keep moving and wait it out.

Fonts of All Knowledge

27 05 2007

I saw a couple of articles in Slate that I thought might interest Helen, Kristen and perhaps other folk as well.

The first is about what font some authors write in and the second is a slideshow about Helvetica.

Lesson for the day - there is a reason people say look AND feel.

Something Fishy This Way Comes

27 05 2007

Hoorah for librarians.

I foolishly imagined that book five, Something Fishy, would be on the crime shelves with books one through four. The catalogue showed it as in but it was nowhere to be seen.

So I asked.

Quick as a flash she picked it straight off the general fiction shelves and deposited it into my grateful hands.

Lesson for the day - I may not have much time for literature but I do love a good story.
