Beautiful Girls

31 10 2007

There are two quite beautiful girls in my house. This one is in front of the camera and the other behind it.

Lesson for the day - sometimes beauty is both sides of the viewfinder.

Wincing: Take Two

30 10 2007

When the latest album from The Shins, Wincing The Night Away, came out I wasted no time at all before buying it on iTunes. I had to buy the first two albums on disc and they were really hard to find so I leapt at this one.

Sadly I found it slower, darker and generally less fun than the first two discs. I didn’t hate it but it wasn’t an instant favourite. Today, as I marked some student work, I listened to this album again. It’s still dark and slow but I also really like it now.

Just thought I’d mention it.

Lesson for the day - give different stuff a few chances.

Minority Report

30 10 2007

Although I suffer no delusion of winning the popular vote for “most inspirational teacher” I was nevertheless quite chuffed to hear from inside sources that I scored several votes.

Lesson for the day - you don’t have to have everyone singing your praises but it certainly helps when some people do.

November Twelve

30 10 2007

Perhaps I am freaking out a little to know that my VCE Geography need to have their marks finalised by November 12. The rest of you, however, need to remain calm.

Lesson for the day - when all else fails hold onto a table.

Hey You

29 10 2007

The album of the week is Ben Lee’s Hey You, Yes You.

I have listened to it before but have pretty much no impression of it at all.

Lesson for the day - “stay on track, stay on track”

Your Little Sister

28 10 2007

The ill-fated relationships of my early 20s are the stuff of legend and this is as much my fault as anyone else’s. One of these ill-fated girlfriends had a younger sister who I got along with really well. I remember she was considerably younger than me and a really lovely kid. The three of us used to do this and that and she was the camera operator (if I remember correctly) on my most foolish and ambitious film project ever.

I think I probably missed her more than I did her older sister when it all went pear shaped. However I was twenty-something and I guess she was probably thirteen or fourteen and those are not good numbers for maintaining a friendship.

Then today, just out of the blue, I got a friend request from her on Facebook and it was lovely to hear from her. Of course it’s been years and years but it’s nice to see that she remembered me fondly enough to pop up and say hello.

Lesson for the day - not all figures from your past are ghosts.

Fixing Sally

27 10 2007

Today saw me getting a tire repaired, fixing the blown headlight, turning around the baby seat and putting in the new (and really loud) etag. Sally is now in pretty good shape for all kinds of driving.

Lesson for the day - you don’t have to suck up to your car but you should be nice to it.
