Trenchant desires are, naturally, most easily discarded as postcards before a cold July. Our true, and by this we mean closely and intimately tied to us with binds made of pure love and fear, friends know that the door is never truly and resolutely closed and not revealed. It is just waiting for the calm of the winter beyond.
from Bleak Days of Considerable Joys
- T. McBuckle
Lesson for the day - I could never write this stuff but I can copy it in here easily enough.
Tomorrow is the day on which tradition says women can propose to men. I don’t delude myself that Nicky has any plans or that I am any better a man than I have been for the other leaps years I’ve been around her.
Lesson for the day - even the bald, overweight and slightly dim can live in hope.
Today I used that collection of newspaper clippings and they went pretty well. My students read an article and did some very simple activities with them. They listed all the people mentioned. They defined three words and found three more they didn’t know to define later.
I asked them to give each give their article a rating out of five for how interesting it was. Of course there were some ones but there was a very encouraging mix of threes, fours and fives.
Lesson for the day - it’s encouraging when something that seems like a good idea goes well.
Sometimes annoying little things in life are simply explained. Somehow it would seem more poetic, interesting or profound if there really was something in the water making many of the students ratty and combative.
Sadly the reality is utterly mundane. They had a day off yesterday and this is what happens.
Lesson for the day - somehow soluble things feel like they can be solved.

I spend the school day with thirty-four school children on a trip to the coast. It is, admittedly, a bit of a worry that you can see me but no teenagers in this photo.
The day went really well. The tide behaved itself, there was no rain, most of the kids went where they were went to, and we found the bus to take us home (eventually).
Lesson for the day - there are far worse places to be than the beach.
