John Hughes ER

February 6th, 2008

We bought a couple of seasons of ER on disc since it is something that Nicky likes to watch. I certainly recognise that it is a really good show but it also brings we down, especially watching the episodes in quick succession. Life for the patients and doctors seems to be full of suffering and hurt. This is punctuated by moments of hope and humour which only make me feel the suffering and hurt all the more.

However last night we watched an different type of episode which was clearly modelled on The Breakfast Club. It followed the “people locked in a room coming to realisations about others and themselves” formula to the letter but still managed to be interested in what went on. And no-one died which I liked.

I did have to leave the room when Dr Carter started quoting Hamlet but then there is a spot in every ER episode where I have to leave anyway so that was no bother.

Lesson for the day – as a viewer I like a bit of relief and the odd curly episode.

Previously on this date..

I watched it for the first time in years when i was away on holiday with Sue. It was incredibly depressing as a stand-alone episode, i think i might have missed any levity that was sprinkled in. Also it was awash in blood. That’s usually what sends me from the room.

I don’t know that I find it depressing in small doses. This is probably because all that action and drama does have quite an energy. I do find that the cumulative effect is to bring me down a bit though.

I don’t mind a bit of blood about the place but the cutting into flesh drives me from the room.
