I was in the school library the other day taking an extra when I happened to see a new book in the office waiting to be processed. It is called Tales from Outer Suburbia and it is by Shaun Tan. I first became aware of him when one of his books, The Lost Thing, was presented to my class by a lecturer.
I didn’t think a whole lot of it all black and white and murky. However sometime later I saw it in Border and in person this is a whole different book. It is textured and gentle and clever. We bought a copy and it is something of a favourite with both Finn and I.
So I borrowed this new book and I like it even more. It is about eight little tales which gentle show whimsy and wisdom. And the illustrations are even more wonderful. I’ll definitely be buying us a copy of this sooner rather than later.
Lesson for the day I am saying is give books a chance.

Not only does your local library have it but both copies at Heaths Road are available and on the shelf.

I have long been lusting after The Lost Thing. Didn’t know he had written another. Guess that’s another on the list.
