The Wisdom of the Weak

September 15th, 2008

I can’t claim to know much about singing but I think I learned the most about my voice and how to best use it when it was the weakest. In times or a cold or otherwise weakened voice I figured out that volume was not the solution to every problem.

Likewise the times when I have been laid low, in terms of voice and general spirits, have been times to learn that volume does not solve all classroom management and learning issues. Mostly raising my voice makes things worse and so does a quiet yet angry voice. However using a friendly or even slightly warm tone goes a long way towards calming things down and getting people to play nicely.

Lesson for the day – there are lessons to be learned in lesser moments.
