Election

November 1st, 2008

I feel like this American presidential election has been coming forever. I have been listening to the Slate Political Gabfest for a good long time now and I feel like they’ve been talking about it forever.

How might think that there would only be so much news in one election. Only so many events and so many opinions. Especially when see through Slate eyes which are overtly small-L liberal.

I don’t subscribe to this idea that all people worldwide should get to choose the American president. I don’t buy this philosophically or practically. I don’t want people who are not Australians choosing our leaders so I don’t imagine that I should get to vote in elections in places where I am not a citizen.

But I do have an opinion and I hope. My opinion is that Barack Obama could make a better American leader than John McCain. My impression is that McCain is mostly honest and his views are heartfelt and genuine. They are just not views I share. And I don’t share all of Obama’s views either but I like the positive message, I like his larger world view, and I certainly hope that he wins.

Lesson for the day – we are free to have opinions but having a say is a different matter.
