Afterwards
December 7th, 2008
My plan is to teach for ten years and then do something else. I am not sure what. Two years into my corporate life I had no idea that I would be a teacher at the end of that so I try not to fuss.
But every now and then someone asks what my plans are after this and the mild tone of panic in their voice sets off a mild voice of panic in me. However for now I am will try to remain calm. Eight years is a long time in which to have a bright idea about what to do next.
Lesson for day – a broad plan is better than no plan and may well be better than a really specific plan.

Hi Mark, dropping in and out of reading of late, but wanted to give a vote of confidence.
In the 10 years since I finished teaching i’ve seen so many people move on to diverse, interesting jobs that none of us could ever have predicted. If I made a list of the pathways taken it would make for happy reading.
A teaching background is a great thing to have & is definitely transferable!
As long as the tone of panic remains in their voices and not yours. I never thought I’d still be in the same job 11 years on, and this is not the job i expected to be in 12 years ago.
i still want to be a pirate.
crikey. that you know what you’ll be doing for the next eight years sounds pretty sorted to me.
and if it makes you feel any better i’m not sure what i’ll be doing in the next three months …
