The Hares

I saw two hares this afternoon,
on the cracked earth where Finn and I usually look for snakes
as we walk through the grass.
I saw the first one when it ran.
Its gait was not so much panicked as steady and confident.
The second one just watched me,
completely still and bunched up on a tuft of grass,
perhaps six feet from each other,
close enough to be quite surprised to see each other there.
I almost took out my mobile phone
to take a photo and capture the moment
but I didn’t bother.
I could no more capture this moment with a camera
than predict this meeting between the shops and home.
At least that’s my story.
